Founded by two Australians, brother and sister duo, Aidan and Kyra, Barefoot Initiative is a not for profit NGO working on community initiated development projects in the Afar region of Ethiopia.
The Afar region is in North Eastern Ethiopia, the hottest inhabited place in the world, with temperatures often about 40 degrees celsius.
Some facts about the Afar region:
Over the last 12 years, Barefoot Initiative have built a health post, an education scholarship program, an agriculture cooperative, and a women’s income generated co-operative in the region. Providing the community with skills, networking, training, infrastructure, and finances, which enables them to put their development ideas into action.
Currently, the Afar region is suffering from a devastating drought, the worst in 30 years.
“UNICEF have declared that an estimated 500,000 children are in need of treatment for severe acute malnutrition and that up to 10 million people (out of a population of 95 million) urgently require relief assistance.”
Along with a number of other International NGOs, and working with their partner team on the ground in Ethiopia, Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA), Barefoot Initiative are delivering aid relief throughout the region.
Aidan, Kyra, and the team at Barefoot Initiative are doing a sensational job, they’re pretty inspiring souls.
Lots of love,
Your Tea Charitea program.
